Advancing defence aircraft validation through mission-representative testing

30 Sept 2026

Defence aircraft validation is challenged by increasingly complex airframes, demanding mission profiles and harsh operational environments, all under tight development schedules. Physical testing remains essential to ensure safety, certification readiness and operational confidence, but must deliver accurate insight efficiently and under realistic conditions.

This paper outlines a mission‑representative testing approach for fighter and special‑mission aircraft, covering ground vibration testing, rugged multi‑physics measurement and dynamic environmental testing. Emphasis is placed on scalable data acquisition strategies capable of capturing synchronized structural, acoustic and environmental responses under high vibration, wide temperature ranges and constrained installation conditions typical of defence platforms.

The contribution also touches on how operational measurements can be condensed into equivalent laboratory‑based vibration and shock tests, enabling accelerated yet representative environmental qualification. Finally, the importance of linking physical test results with digital models across the verification lifecycle is highlighted. Examples are illustrated using capabilities available within modern integrated test environments such as the Simcenter testing ecosystem.
