How does AURA AERO’s aeronautical expertise and industrial agility translate into value for the defence sector?

“AURA AERO combines the discipline of a certified aircraft manufacturer with the speed and flexibility of a new-generation aerospace company. We design, certify and industrialise complete aircraft, which gives us control over the full value chain, from initial requirements to production and operational support.

“For defence customers, that means shorter development cycles, greater adaptability and platforms designed around real operational needs rather than inherited architectures. Our approach is based on rapid prototyping, design-to-cost, digital engineering and early industrial preparation. The objective is not simply to develop a demonstrator, but to deliver reliable, certifiable and scalable solutions that can be produced rapidly and evolved throughout their service life.”

What does ‘scalable and responsible’ mean in the context of the defence aviation platforms you’re developing?

“Scalable means developing platforms that can evolve in terms of missions, payloads, autonomy and production volumes. A modern defence aircraft must be able to integrate new sensors, communication systems or mission capabilities without requiring a complete redesign.

“It also means being able to move from a small initial fleet to higher production rates when operational requirements change. Recent conflicts have shown that availability, affordability and the ability to replenish fleets matter as much as individual platform performance.

“Responsible means using resources more efficiently. This includes reducing fuel consumption, maintenance requirements, noise and operating costs, but also avoiding excessive complexity. Defence sustainability is not only environmental. It is also about designing aircraft that are affordable to operate, easier to maintain and capable of remaining relevant over time.”

How do the skills and technology built through Integral and ERA carry over into defence applications?

“Integral and ERA have allowed us to build expertise that is directly transferable to defence. Through Integral, we have developed a highly agile training platform, advanced flight dynamics, digital systems and certified industrial processes. These capabilities are particularly relevant for pilot training, UPRT and the preparation of future military aviators.

“ERA brings a different set of technologies: hybrid-electric propulsion, fly-by-wire controls, energy management, digital twins, predictive maintenance and highly flexible aircraft architecture. These technologies can support future defence missions including surveillance, transport, logistics, medical evacuation and operations from short or unprepared runways.

“The key point is that our defence strategy is not disconnected from our civil programmes. It builds on proven technologies, existing teams and an industrial base that already meets demanding aviation standards.”

Why is sovereignty such a central theme in your strategic vision, and how does AURA AERO support it?

“Sovereignty is the ability to design, produce, operate and upgrade critical capabilities without excessive dependence on external suppliers or political decisions outside Europe.

“In aviation, sovereignty depends on far more than final assembly. It requires control over engineering, software, data, certification, industrial processes and the supply chain. It also requires the ability to modify an aircraft rapidly when operational needs evolve.

“AURA AERO supports this ambition by developing aircraft in France, building a European industrial ecosystem and prioritising architectures that can remain free from restrictive foreign dependencies. Our ENBATA MALE platform, for example, is being developed with a sovereign approach. Our ambition is to strengthen the ability of France and Europe to act independently, while also creating industrial capacity, skilled jobs and export opportunities.”

What role can innovation-driven, agile companies like AURA AERO play alongside established defence primes?

“We do not see agile companies and major defence groups as competitors by definition. The strongest ecosystem is one in which each contributes its best capabilities.

“Established primes bring deep experience, global industrial reach and expertise in complex defence systems. Companies like AURA AERO can bring speed, new architectures, digital culture and a willingness to challenge traditional development models.

“We can also take calculated risks earlier, test concepts rapidly and design platforms around affordability and mass production from the outset. This is increasingly important as armed forces seek to shorten acquisition cycles and respond faster to emerging threats. The future will depend on more open partnerships between primes, innovative manufacturers, technology companies and operational users.”

How do you see electric and hybrid aviation technology fitting into future defence requirements?

“Electric and hybrid propulsion will not replace every defence aircraft, but it can create decisive advantages for specific missions. Electric flight can significantly reduce acoustic and thermal signatures. That is particularly relevant for surveillance, intelligence and operations requiring discretion. Hybrid-electric architectures can also reduce fuel consumption, extend endurance and improve energy management on board.

“These technologies create new possibilities for distributed propulsion, redundancy and electrical power availability for sensors or mission systems. However, the defence sector needs pragmatic solutions. The objective is not electrification for its own sake. It is to use the right technology where it creates a real operational advantage.”

What operational performance advantages do modern, purpose-built platforms offer over legacy defence aircraft?

“Legacy aircraft are often effective, but many were designed decades ago for different missions and operating environments. Modern platforms can be designed from the beginning around today’s priorities: connectivity, modularity, low operating cost, reduced signatures and rapid mission reconfiguration.

“They can integrate digital systems more easily, generate and use operational data more effectively and require fewer maintenance resources. They can also be optimised for shorter runways and dispersed operations, which improves resilience.

“A purpose-built aircraft does not carry the weight, complexity or limitations of an architecture inherited from another era. This creates better availability and a more favourable cost-to-effect ratio.”

What’s the next milestone in AURA AERO’s defence strategy, and what should the industry watch for?

“The next major milestone is the continued development and flight testing of ENBATA, our sovereign MALE platform. The industry should watch how we combine rapid development, civil certification methodologies and defence mission capabilities within a single programme.

“More broadly, AURA AERO will continue expanding its defence portfolio through Integral M, ENBATA and future aircraft concepts derived from ERA technologies. Our objective is clear: to provide scalable, affordable and sovereign aircraft that can be developed and industrialised at the pace required by today’s strategic environment.”

Is there anything else you would like to add?

“Defence aviation is entering a period of profound transformation. Performance remains essential, but speed, affordability, resilience and industrial capacity have become equally strategic.

“Europe has the engineering talent and industrial expertise to lead this transformation. What it now needs is the willingness to accelerate, cooperate differently and give innovative aircraft manufacturers the opportunity to contribute.

“At AURA AERO, we believe the future belongs to intelligent, adaptable and responsibly designed aircraft, built not only for today’s missions, but for a world that is changing faster than ever.”
