Robotized laser-excited ultrasonic testing for aerospace structures
30 Sept 2026
Conventional ultrasonic testing is limited by restricted access to confined areas, complex 3D geometries, and the need for water coupling. This presentation introduces robotized laser-excited ultrasonic testing, where a laser generates ultrasound and an Optical Microphone detects it without contact, enabling a water-free inspection head for robotic integration. Compared to conventional ultrasonic testing, the method reduces preparation and cycle time. The presentation demonstrates the method through three application examples: a helicopter tail boom with restricted access, a curved CFRP structure, and a bonded engine seal that otherwise requires extensive inspection preparation.
